Confluence - ChatGPT Integration: elevated permissions barrier for org-wide integration

I've managed to integrate Confluence with ChatGPT Business via the Atlassian remote MCP server, and the results are very promising for productivity. However, I've hit a roadblock that might resonate with others:

  • To connect Confluence to ChatGPT, the integration requires a user with elevated permissions (rights to add users and change roles in Confluence).
  • These rights are unrelated to the integration's purpose (accessing and retrieving page content).
  • The integration does not work for people with simple User access in Confluence.
  • Scaling this to the whole company is not feasible due to obvious security and governance risks.

Questions to the community:

  • Has anyone found a secure workaround that avoids granting unnecessary elevated privileges to users to enable them connect?

  • Are there best practices for handling this for the whole company?

It seems like a blocker for many organizations looking to feed Confluence to their AI assistants.
