How does Git compare to TFVC?

We're currently looking to move away from PVCS to either Git or TFVC because we want to use TFS. We're not a Microsoft shop, but we have other Microsoft teams that we may integrate with in the future. If we can use TFS & TFVC along with them, that would make cross-team collaboration a little easier. We've looked heavily into Git and are very pleased with it. We're wondering how it compares to TFVC but haven't done a ton of research yet. We're wondering if y'all have experience that could help expedite our research.

1. I'm primarily concerned about TFVC's support for anything outside of .NET.
2. Secondarily, about how its branching and merging differ; can TFVC handle many parallel branches well like Git does?
