How can I tell the number of currently active users against an unlimited Confluence license?

We have a legacy unlimited Confluence licence that will expire next year. This tier is being phased out and I need to see how many people are actually using our instance so I can decide what support tier to purchase. My JIRA server with a 500 user license shows me the number of active users.

How can I see the number of active users on my unlimited Confluence server?

If you just want a simple count go to the search page and do a people search without any terms it will give you a count. The below URL should get you a count. Just replace {yourserver} with ... your server.

Anyone can have access to the wiki, so importing all LDAP users makes sense. I'm really interested in learning the number of people who currently use the wiki so I can learn the proper maintenance tier that we should purchase. When I listed the names of the users after getting the count, I found a number that have left the company. I really don't want them included in the active user count. BTW: I would have answered sooner but I'm only allowed 3 responses until I have enough points.

That is not how the licensing works. If you import 2000 people, but only 500 ever use it you need to have the 2000 tier license. You should only import the number of people that you want to have access to the wiki. The best way to manage the licensing that I have found is to have an LDAP group called confluence-users. Then you set up your ldap filter to only import people that are in that group.

We have Confluence synchronized with Active Directory via Crowd and we are limiting access to Confluence based on AD group membership. We have 48 group members and the license count reflects this but the above query returns every AD user account regardless of group membership so the count far exceeds the 48 licensed users.

Hey @Kent cross I figured I'd chime in even though this post is old. I had a similar issue where I wanted to see the total active licenses with their respective last login date and whether or not they used paid or free features. I found License Logic helpful in getting to the bottom of this. Plus, they have a nice feature to automatically reclaim unused licenses for us.

Thank you. This did return a count, and it was exactly what I asked for, so I will mark your answer as the correct one. Unfortunately, the count was a huge number, and I suspect that it either represents everyone who has ever logged into our wiki, or it represents a count of everyone in our LDAP User Directory, whether or not they have ever touched the wiki. I'll work with Support on this.

It should not represent anyone who has ever logged, but rather those people who are currently listed in the system as users. If the number is bigger than you think it should be I would look at how you have it hooked up to LDAP. Are you simply importing all LDAP users or are you filtering that import to only those that should have access?

Take a look at https://marketplace.atlassian.com/plugins/com.wittified.confluence.user-deactivator . We're coming out with the next version the next couple of weeks which will fix the load time issue. Even if you don't buy it - it will tell you who's not logged in and who has...

Unfortunately, this query returns a list of the users, not a count of them. Plus, for some local configuration reasons, I was unable to get this query to work on my instance. Does anyone know of a way to return a count of active users?
