How to include custom dropdown2 in nav menu resizing

I am adding a new <li> to the application header nav-menu with AJS.
Unfortunately as the browser window is resized,the additional width of my element is ignored, causing the primary-nav and secondary-nav to overlap.
My li does not get folded under the "More" menu like other dropdowns do, but I can see no substantial difference in the html.
