Is copying the content of a complete page better than simply replacing the page?

I am trying to implement the release process that is recommended by Atlassian:

It states that when releasing, I should "Copy the content of the updated pages to the proper pages, then delete the copies." At least for pages without child pages, I don't see why this solution is better than simply deleting the original pages, and then removing "copy of" part from the title of the copies. Is there a reason why I should not replace the original page with the copy?

(Note: no, I don't have access to the collaborative features such as shared drafts)

I believe this is to ensure no links to the original page are broken. This was how Atlassian made it work back in the day. They use our app Scroll Versions now, which has an automated publishing process, so they can avoid this step.
