Merging Confluence Instance

We have requirement to merge two confluence instances into one single instance. Space export and import is the selected way to do this, but once instance uses crowd users with username as firstname.lastname where other instance uses crowd users with username as employee id. the source instance having around 9000 users and 700 spaces and 15 plugins. please explain a way to proceed this ?

I'd think the simple solution is to modify the source instance's usernames to match.

You should be able to do this using the Crowd REST APIs; using the Rename method.
