Hello World,

we are testing Confluence and we have a question about the Hierachy:

is it possible to save a document in two or more folders in the hierachy? We want to save a document like:

Tech\ExchangeServer\Connectors\ProviderABC\How to connect Exchange with ProviderABC

Tech\Provider\ProviderABC\Exchange\How to connect Exchange with ProviderABC

Booth locations contains the same document.

That's a very important feature we are looking for.

Thx

Alex

Hi Alex,

not sure what your use case is exactly, but this may help: you can embed the content of one page in other pages.

So the page is edited in one location, but you can display the entire content in other locations, too.

See details here: https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/include-page-macro-139514.html

Best, Henning

Hello Henning,

that works! Great thanks!

My intention is, that users find an answer in many pages, but i want to edit only one page.

Hi Alexander,

Based on your description, it sounds like you're using a WebDAV setup to access Confluence attachments through a file structure, is this accurate?

If this is the case, you can't have two folders with the same title in the same space, since these will correlate with Confluence pages that will also have the title and cannot be duplicated.

There are a couple of alternatives:

  • Put these page structures in separate spaces.
  • Set up a title standard to disambiguate such pages so they can be distinguished from others. An example would be to put the distinguishing element in parentheses in the title afterward (e.g. "How to connect...(ExchangeServer)" & "How to connect...(ProviderABC). For ideas on disambiguation, Wikipedia has a great guide they've used to create unique names for almost 6 million pages: Wikipedia: Disambiguation.

I hope this helps!

Hi Alex,

If you want the same content on 2 different Confluence pages, you may want to look into using the Excerpt and Excerpt Include macros.  @Jay Karmarkar is right in that you can't have multiple instances of a page name within a space, so the pages will either need to be named differently or kept in separate spaces.  One would serve as the main page hosting the content within the Excerpt macro.  The other would just use the Excerpt Include macro to pull in the content from the main page.

Good luck!

Hi Alex,

Yes, this is possible. You can attach the same document on different pages within a space.

But from the example of the path that you provided in your question:

(Tech\ExchangeServer\Connectors\ProviderABC\How to connect Exchange with ProviderABC

Tech\Provider\ProviderABC\Exchange\How to connect Exchange with ProviderABC)

I would like to clarify that even though there can be 2 instances of the same attachment in a space with the same name, there cannot be 2 pages with the same name within a space.

I hope this helps.

Hi Jay,

ok, i think i have to explain it a little bit more:

i want to save a page in two or more different folders, not an attachement. I want to browse my hierachy and want to find a page in two or more different folders. The name "How to connect Exchange with ProviderABC" is not a folder, it is the name of the page i want to save.

Hi Alex,

As I mentioned in my earlier answer, you will not be able to have the same page name within a confluence space. Also, the concept of folders in not present in confluence. The only way you can implement a hierarchy is by creating a page under a page.

What you might wanna do, if that's ok with you is, rename one of the pages with a hyphen or something so that the names don't clash. The content can remain the same.
