How can I control a Confluence macro from a custom field in JIRA?

I want to control the Status macro in Confluence (see screenshot) from a custom 'Project Status' field in JIRA (see screenshot). The idea is to be able to update the status of a project within the JIRA issue and have the results automatically display via a colored graphic (Green, Yellow, Red) on a Confluence page.

You'll need to do some coding in both Jira and Confluence to achieve that, including hacking the status macro to support it
