Inline comments in Confluence 5.7: internal format / perennity of the feature

The new inline comment feature is pretty interesting but before using it at large, I want to know how / where this information is stored and how /if it can be accessible in other ways. Should we eventually decide to migrate some content elsewhere (not confluence), how would it be possible to use (not loose) those annotations? Current page comments can be exported (export space), but not those in-line comments. Our internal users also want to annotate PDF and other documents to easily point where some changes occured between versions and to document what drove those changes. How can I reassure the users that this information will always be accessible, in a way or another?

We would be interested in such a feature, too. We are using the new annotation feature within PDF files to discuss this between teams, but sometimes we need to discuss this with other people, without access to Confluence. So it would be great to be able to print a PDF including all annotations.
