Is there a way to keep viewers from modifying task lists?

This question is in reference to Atlassian Documentation: Working with Tasks

I want to use a task list to indicate to viewers which tasks have been completed.  I want only editors to be able to modify the state of a task (complete or not).  I am using page restrictions to try to achieve this, but viewers are able to change the state of a task.

Alternatively, can i change the bullet character to a check on an item by item basis?

When somebody may view but not edit, the modification of tasks will not be possible. So you should restrict editing on the particular page to those who should be able to modify. All the rest will just be able to view then.
