Hi,

The documentation https://confluence.atlassian.com/conf58/migrating-to-another-database-771892814.html suggests doing a side-by-side reinstallation of the entire application in most scenarios. However there are 2 notes: one if not updating in place, the other is about changing the JDBC URL if just moving the database.

Does this mean you can just update the JDBC URL if you take a SQL Server 2008 R2 backup and restore it to an SQL Server 2014 (including changing it's compatibility level to 2014)?

Yes.

That's a really short answer, but you've got it pretty much right there, as long as the copy of the database looks the same to Confluence, just changing the jdbc url should effectively move it.

Be sure to have the database settings exactly as the documentation requires. Otherwise Confluence refuses to cooperate on later updates or, if your Confluence version is new enough, refuses to start.
