Child pages inherit restrictions from their parents. As a result, you could say that restrictions can get tighter going down a page tree, but never looser.

A parent page can be restricted to users X, Y and Z

Its child can be restricted to users X and Y by adding the restriction manually to the page.

The child cannot be made available to users X, Y, Z and W, because W doesn't have access to the parent page.

No I guess, the parent permission is first applied. But what are you actually trying to achieve?

Z is a student who should not see the child page

Am sorry, read your description wrongly. It should be possible as the permission is a sub set of the parent.
