Am I going to have to put a new license key in each year?

Jason Perry April 16, 2020

I logged in to Confluence and it said our license was expired.  We had recently renewed this... Am I going to have to put a new license key in each year when this product is renewed?  Strange way of licensing, if that's the case...

Thanks,

Jason

Yes, for now, you will.

I'd like to see something a bit more clever - it's not hard to write a "phone home" system.  An obvious example is Steam, which has done it since day 1.  Their servers know what games I've got with them so which ones will run.

Atlassian licencing has to be different and I completely understand "put new licence key in".  Especially as a lot of Atlassian services are firewalled or even air-gapped away from the internet and hence can't do what I'd like them to do.

But for those that are not, the conversation can't be that hard to code.  "Hey, Atlassian, my licence expires in a month, my SEN is ..., has a human paid the bill?  Yes?  Great, I'll grab the new key and not bother my admins"

Thanks!

(This is my first post in 'Community' so please let me know if simple "Thanks!" messages are better left out.  Thank you!)

No problem, your question was exactly the sort of thing we're here for.

I could have left you with just the first line of my answer because it answers the question, technically.  But you gave me an invitation to talk about how it could be done better, so I did., because I like to.  And I apologise for waffling.

We welcome simple Thanks! messages, it tells us we're being helpful.  (Also the "mark right" thing, but I prefer to hear "thanks" than "points")
