Does confluence have citations/references support

Is there a way in confluence to cite/reference similarly to how  Wikipedia references work? (I'm aware of direct links, but I want to have an auto-generated list of references and properly generated cite-links at the position of the citation like Wikipedia does).

We are writing software design descriptions in Confluence, and in the document I want to cite and reference minutes of meetings (also created in confluence) as the source for why we are doing something, or why a certain feature is needed.

Hi Andreas,

This functionality is not available natively in Confluence. However, you may be interested in this free plugin that offers that functionality: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/plugins/de.edrup.confluence.plugins.simple-cite. It's compatible with Confluence version 5.5.6 and above.

No, this does not help. It only references a plugin not available for the many of us stuck on Cloud instances of Confluence.

Dear all, as far as I see SimpleCite is not free, but only has a free trial period. 

I am compiling a report for my company, that includes an extensive literature review and I want to cite sources of information. Is there a way to do this within Confluence?

Simple Cite for Cloud is not free yes - it costs money to host the application and we can't provide this for free. Simple Cite for Server was free until recently - you can download the last free version 1.5.8 from the Marketplace.

Alternative: take the source code (both cloud and server are open source) and build your own free version for personal use.

Well, I have to admit, doing something requires one or more actions and not being able to do it all all requires zero steps. So, that is a simplification!

Simple Cite doesn't help. It's not working properly with the actual Editor (Cloud, of course). Developer says it is caused by Confluence. sigh

Please. Professional projects without footnotes? And all workarounds not supported on Cloud?

Has to be fixed very soon. Not even anchors supported anymore. Will work with comments for the time being, but need a final and professional solution soon.

You can manually create this using Superscripts and anchors. Personally I don't worry about the anchors as I use the Footnotes system, but the Superscript approach works nicely with numbered lists. 

To do this, just type your text and place your number or letter after the text (numbers work better). Go back once you are finished the paragraph and change the numbers to Superscript. At the end of a document put the Horizontal Rule and underneath type the Footnotes you wanted to appear. 

If you leave a space after your last paragraph you can do this as you go so its not so much of a hassle at the end of the document.

Here's how to link to content from within Confluence

Link to a page

If it's a page in the same space:

• Choose Link > Search then enter part of the page name. Select the page when it appears in the list.
• Choose Link > Recently viewed and select a page from the list.
• Type [ and enter part of the page name, then select the page from the list.
• Paste the URL of the page onto your page (Confluence will automatically create the link).

If it's a page in a different space:

• Choose Link > Search and from the space dropdown, either select the space the page lives in, or All Spaces. Then enter part of the page name, and select the page when it appears in the list.
• Choose Link > Advanced then enter the space key followed by the page name spacekey:mypage.
• Type [ and enter part of the page name then select the page from the list. (You can hover over each suggestion to see which space the page is from).

I am not sure if this plugin answers' your question;

we  have released a plugin namely 'QC Documents for Confluence Cloud' that enables to auto generate two tables :

1. Citation table - that lists all the pages that cite the current page

2. Internal reference table - that lists all the internal references pages that can be found at the current page.

More information you may find here . The plugin is only available for the Confluence Cloud.
