Yesterday we were having issues with disk space for Confluence that caused end user issues. After clearing up some space and confirming end users were able to perform the needed tasks, Confluence was still alerting for low disk space. I ran a search index last night just to see if that would help anything. When I got into work this morning, free disk space had jumped around 11G from what it was when I left yesterday. I'm trying to prove what caused this but cannot find any documentation stating that the index would have been it.
