Tooltip for text in the middle of a line

SANDERS, MANDY March 17, 2023

We are on Confluence Server and the environment is pretty locked down. No user-defined macros and no appetite to purchase macros or even install free ones.

I'm attempting to use the built-in tooltip macro to add definitions to certain words in a paragraph, but I can't figure out how to do it without causing a line break in the middle of a sentence.

What I want:

What I tried:

tooltip2.png

(Note that all three words were on the same line before I highlighted "tooltip" and inserted the span macro.)

What I got:

tooltip3.png

My second attempt was using markup, which produced a more desirable result, but seems difficult to maintain as there's no indication when in edit mode that the markup exists and no way to edit it, as far as I can tell.

Is there a better way to achieve my desired result?

@SANDERS, MANDY Welcome to the Atlassian community

If you inspect the Tooltip Macro's html on the page can you see why a line break is occurring?

Great idea!  I found the culprit.

I placed the above snippet in an HTML macro and removed the line break before the last word and now it works as expected.  Thank you!
