We are on Confluence Server and the environment is pretty locked down. No user-defined macros and no appetite to purchase macros or even install free ones.
I'm attempting to use the built-in tooltip macro to add definitions to certain words in a paragraph, but I can't figure out how to do it without causing a line break in the middle of a sentence.

(Note that all three words were on the same line before I highlighted "tooltip" and inserted the span macro.)
What I got:
My second attempt was using markup, which produced a more desirable result, but seems difficult to maintain as there's no indication when in edit mode that the markup exists and no way to edit it, as far as I can tell.
Is there a better way to achieve my desired result?

If you inspect the Tooltip Macro's html on the page can you see why a line break is occurring?
Great idea! I found the culprit.
I placed the above snippet in an HTML macro and removed the line break before the last word and now it works as expected. Thank you!
