Update confluence with recently acquired license ... consequences?

Hello, I recently acquired and managed to install Confluence server 6.0.7 with MySQL database (it is the version I needed, since it was to integrate it with Jira 7.3.8).

I can see, that just installed and without any data, with just my administrator user, it makes me an excessively high consumption of the processor, in addition to a lot of RAM, for now the use of memory does not worry me so much.
On the server, with an average processor use of 10% (with more services loaded), it has gone into continuous use of 40%, but if I stop Confluence, it returns to 10%.

I repeat, Confluence just installed, without any data.

I have seen that the main recommendation in this forum is to update confluence. So my questions are the following ...

- What happens to the license I have recently acquired? Will it still work with the new version?

- And if I update Confluence ... Will it integrate correctly with my Jira 7.3.8?

NOTE: If the solution also involves updating Jira 7.3.8, the questions with the license are the same but with respect to Jira, in addition to whether all the data can be correctly restored ....

The current license for Confluence will still hold valid even after you upgrade to a newer version of Confluence.

There should not be any issue in terms of configuring JIRA and Confluence with the new version ( at least the versions that you are talking about )

JIRA or/and Confluence - upgrade will not impact your license. License has to be regenerated in two cases - 1) if it expires 2) if you are changing license type - say from 500 users to 1000 users.

If you are talking about data after upgrade - it all depends on how safely you upgrade , if you upgrade will , data will be fine.

Also , upgrade wizard of JIRA allows you to take backup before upgrade starts ( and if you havent taken a backup already)

Also , memory consumption from 10% to 40% doesn't seem to be much of any issue to me though.

Confluence has it's own memory usage and " SYNCRONY - the collaboration logic of Confluence" must also be using some memory - it should be fine.

But what is your current memory allocation in the server ?

Wait a moment, I think it didn't explain me well ... That's not the problem.

It is not a 10 to 40% increase in memory. It is an increase in CPU usage. Confluence use  continuously the 30% CPU only with the service started.

Confluence, newly installed, uses 30% of my CPU. All the time, 24 hours/day.

Exactly, this is the problem. A confluence, newly installed and with that CPU usage, without users and without data. Only started.

- It is normal? 24/7
- Why does all that CPU use?

There are no users using confluence !!!

Can you run a grep on confluence user and also on java processes to show us what all java processes are running and what all processes are owned by the user id confluence.

CPU problems begin when some user launch processes in another application. For example, in this image a user has launched jenkins and slows down other users.

So it doesn't look like Confluence is the problem there. CPU usage seems to spike at every instance of any process running in that server.

How many CPU cores does the server have ? Maybe you can work on it and hike it .

Yes, what misses me is so much CPU usage by confluence, being "clean" - freshly installed .... In the last image that I have put, I have asked a user to launch a laborious task in Jenkins. From what I think, that CPU usage is normal at that time. What doesn't seem normal to me is the constant 24/7 CPU usage by confluence. And for that, this query.

Yes, it has many applications, yes ... but I'm juggling, since the intense use and at the same time of several applications is not usual. Normally it is Jira + some other application and that takes it well.

As you can see, memory resident applications do not make excessive use of CPU (except confluence) jejejejejejeje.

1) Increase the cpu core to 4 and observe the change in behaviour.

2) Do you see any performance issue when there is a cpu spike ?

No there is no problem.

If I stop the Confluence service, my server works perfectly with all other applications and services. Work spike are not a problem for the server.

Actually, I do not see that the solution is to add 4 cores, I think that your "solution" is to avoid the problem,  the problem would still exist but on a better equipped server.

What I wish is that Confluence does not make excessive use of hardware. There has to be a problem and I don't want that problem to "explode" when my users are in full workload with Confluence. That would be a big problem for my work and that of my fellow users.

So, how much memory you have actually allocated for Confluence JVM? 

And do you have an "empty" Confluence or have restored some backup/spaces? In this case the Confluence index might be the cause (to rebuilt the index)

All these doubts, which in principle, the answer is obvious, are because, before buying the Confluence license, I saw that the only confluence version that Atlassian indicated for my Jira 7.3.8 was 6.0.7. If it weren't for that, I would have acquired the license of a current Confluence.

By the way, the installation is done in Ubuntu without graphic environment.

You can upgrade confluence and jira and still use the same license - it is not a problem.

The server has 26gb of RAM installed, Jira and other services use (with Confluence stopped) 13.7gb. At the moment I start, as I indicate, without users with access except the administrator and without any user data, the memory consumption rises to 17gb.

I access confluence without problem from the web browser.

The issue is that when my users run services and launch applications, if I have a usual peak of 90% and the memory consumption rises, that's why I recently acquired more memory, so that in the request peaks of my users, none experienced Slow in your work.

Like I said - 17GB consumption with JIRA and Confluence both running in the same server should not be an issue . 

You still have 9GB of memory that you can play with - which is a lot of memory.

 I would suggest you to assess with time as to how memory spikes with users working actively.

26GB for start seems fine to me.

How many active users - projects - issues - workflows do you have ?

Based on these data you can make a decision on what to do next - if you want to further increase memory or not.

Also, if there are any plugins that you think is not needed - you can disable them.

If, as you indicated, there is no licensing problem when updating it, and there are no integration problems of Jira - Confluence and vice versa ...

The high use of processor leads my server to a high temperature and a slower process speed for my users. That is part of my concern about the high use of the Confluence processor, without data and without users. Since Jira at full capacity, it does not come close to so much processor consumption.

In Jira, there will be have about 50 active projects plus as many archived and users... I have 16 active.

1) You can increase the memory to prevent future problems - as both JIRA and Confluence runs in the same server and expecting that users will increase in future - workflows will increase in future - you can increase some memory , say around 36 GB

And in the future - you can move over to JIRA DataCenter Version. This will help you share loads in future.

Always increasing memory is not the solution.

2) No problem with licensing and link between jira and confluence.

3) Your number of user is still very small though.
