What version of Confluence are you using? Did you try to rebuild the search index (go to: Confluence Admin => Content Indexing => Rebuild)? We had some customers with similar problems, rebuilding the search index helped in most cases.
Version 3.5.9.
Thanks for responding Remo and yes I have recently rebuilt the 'search index' which appeared to resolve the issue, but once again the dashboard is not refreshing. Could this be a possible issue with the local caches and the fact that I may need to flush the cache for certain things that are at 100% used? The problem is I don't know what the pros/cons are of flushing the cache.

I would check the log files if there are any related error messages. Otherwise i would suggest to contact Atlassian support.
I assume you already tried to restart Confluence? You could try to flush the caches, but I'm not sure if it will solve the problem. The cons are that after flushing the cache the first X requests to the database for Confluence content like attachments, pages, users, etc. or to Crowd will take much longer as usual. This won't have much of an impact if your Confluence has not many users/much content, but in bigger instances it could have.

If restart didn't work you probably need more RAM on the server.
