Add users to jira-users automatically when a user is added to a project

ice color April 4, 2018

We have Service Desk with 5000 users and keeps growing. Whenever a user needs access to a Jira project, two steps need to be taken care of in any order.

  • we add the user to jira-users group (that gives them access to Jira Software)
  • project administrator adds the user to their project users under project roles and permissions.

How can we automate adding the users to jira-users group (so they get jira access) when the user is added to project users role by the project administrator?

The only way to grant a license to a user currently is to assign application access to a user or group.  If you're able to manage project roles on a group level, these groups could be set to grant JIRA access.  Then when a user is added to a group, they would gain access to JIRA and be put in the roles associated with that group.  I suspect that you're looking for more granularity than that given the size of your user base, but I wanted to mention it in the event that it was useful.
