If I were you and, if it's not such a big instance, I would create a new custom field, add it in the create/edit screen, deleting the old field from the create/edit screen and add both fields in the view screen.
With this configuration you will have both fields working with your history and the new issues.
Once you have it, you can plan a bulk edit in order to move these field values.
