Copy only 'x' number of characters from one field to another?

Hello, 

I am wondering if it's possible to automatically copy only a pre-defined set of characters from the Description field to a custom text field during transition. Any ideas?

You would need an add-on for it like Power Scripts or ScriptRunner.
