When I am querying for issues, (Search screen) I see options under the Status filter. The order of these depends on the order listed under Issues --> Statuses under Administration. Is there another way to control this order, since re-ordering what could be hundreds of Statuses on the Admin screen is not easy to do? I was hoping I could use opsbar property in the workflow, but that does not change the order of the listing under the Statuses filter on the issue Search screen.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to control the ordering of statuses in the search UI out of the box. Within each project, you can control the display ordering within a Workflow, but not in the search UI.
You can look into Atlassian Marketplace for possible third party add-ons that can provide you with the functionality (I am not aware of any at this time). You can also contact Atlassian Support (https://support.atlassian.com) for possible assistance on this matter.
