Epics not displayed in Scrum Board

bruno robin September 1, 2023

Hi all,

Is there a way to make Jira epics displayed in a Scrum board (not in a Kanban board)?

Briefly speaking, I've built a Jira filter that returns some Jira issues, among which lot of epics, then a Scrum board with that filter. Unfortunately, epics are not displayed in Backlog section of the board, so no hope to drag any of them into the sprint section of the board. I'm using Jira 8.20.11.

Is that a known feature/limitation of the Jira scrum boards? BTW if I build a Kanban board using the same filter, epics do appear.

For the record, I've seen a solution that tells to disable the epic panel on the board (in columns section of the board settings) but my Jira version does not offer that possibility (available only in Cloud version?).

This subject has already been discussed but in old posts, so I'd like to know if status has changed.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Labulle22

Hello @bruno robin

Epics are generally not assigned to Sprints because they are usually a larger scope and longer time frame than work that can be completed within a sprint. The intention is to assign only the child issues of an Epic to a sprint.

As such, Jira is designed to not show Epics in the backlog list, nor show cards for Epics on a Scrum board.

Can you tell us more about your scenario where you think it is necessary and appropriate to assign your Epics to sprints?

Hi Trudy,

Briefly speaking, in our Jira project we've defined a hierarchy that comprises custom and native Jira issue types, and in that hierarchy instances of the native Epic type can be managed alone, i.e. they may have children but that's not mandatory.

"As such, it is Jira is designed to not show Epics in the backlog list, nor show cards for Epics on a Scrum board.": do you mean it's technically impossible to have epics in Scrum boards? BTW are you aware of the option I mentioned and that could be only available in Jira Cloud version?

Bruno

Hello @bruno robin

To the best of my knowledge it is technically not possible to display cards for Epics in Scrum boards.

Can you provide a link to your reference that suggested it could be done by disabling the Epics panel? I believe that applies only to Kanban boards.

If you use the new Enhanced My Board and Backlog option you can opt to not display the Epics panel, but that does not result in the Epics displaying as cards in either the Backlog or Active Sprints views.

That adds an Epics filter to both views. In the Backlog view at the bottom of that filter is an option to turn on/off the Epics panel.

Both of those concern a Kanban board so it isn't applicable to your scenario.

Hi Trudy,

Sorry, I was really convinced this was about Scrum boards and not Kanban boards. I've carefully reviewed the short video again and took the screenshot below:

Not a Scrum board?

Directly below where you circled "Backlog" it says "Kanban Board". So, no, that is not a Scrum board.

OK Trudy, received! Many thanks for the time spent to help me.

Hi @BRUN,

I'm using Jira Dc (9.4.6) so far this option is not available for Scrum boards.

Thanks,

Melo

Hi Melo,
Thanks for the information. So nothing to expect from a Jira SW upgrade.

Bruno
PS: as far as I understand, I cannot accept your answer since by doing so the thread would be closed whereas the discussion is still ongoing on the possibility or not to make epic appear in Scrum boards. Please tell me if I'm wrong.

I  have the same issue and here's how I solve it. On the right panel view settings, the last option is a toggle to show or hide the Epic label. I'm am doing this in a scrum company manage board.
