How to change the order of the possible link types when linking issues?

Hello,

I'm looking in the Jira admin (I have full access) but I don't find what I'm looking for, so maybe the feature is not there.

When I link 2 issues, by default I see 'is blocked by' for the link type, and 'relates to' at the end.

This matches what I see in the admin under the Issue linking configuration page.

What I'd like to do is to change the order of the link types, to have 'relates to' as the first / default choice of link.

Is it possible, or is it planned for a future release?

Thank you all for your time.

Hi @Jean-Michel Bernard

Not sure its possible using normal config - I tried a few different things (none of which worked):

  • Used numbers to change the order of the link types in the Issue Linking area in Site Administration - but this had no impact on the linked issue list in issue edit.
  • Adding stars or numbers to the inward / outward names to try and create a list of descriptions - but this didn't work.
  • Removing the current default option in our environment completely. When I did this the default was not the second in the list - it was the fourth! I added the deleted option back and it became the default again...

It looks like there is a request you could vote on - see JRASERVER-16281

Hi @Inactive Stephen,

Thanks a lot for your answer.

You're right, and thanks for the link for vote.

I'll vote for this one and the Jira cloud one : https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-16281

Cheers

Hi @Inactive Stephen

Thanks a lot for your answer.

I'll vote for this request and the one for Jira Cloud: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-16281

But also I've seen this comment in the request you linked: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRASERVER-16281?focusedCommentId=141917&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-141917

Basically a workaround by editing adding spaces to the names of the link types to change the alphabetical order. I'll give it a shot.

Cheers.

Hello,

Tried it, did not work.

I'll just hope that they implement this feature at some point.

Always worth a shot - thanks for letting me know that the other option you found didn't work :)

And here I was hoping there was a work around.  I'll also add my vote to the feature request.

Maybe something changed int he last couple of years - I was able to modify the "Name" field of relates to, which moved it to the top of the alphabetical order. Now it shows up as the first issue link type in my Company-managed software project:

Are you using Jira Server or Jira Cloud?

This worked for me too, just now, using the cloud version, company managed.  No need to change the "Outward description" or "Inward Description", just the Name which users don't see anyway.

Like others, I am mostly interested in the "relates to" link type, who's default name is "Relates".  By prefixing the Name with "1", it moves from the bottom to the top of the list, and when editing issues, "relates to" now also appears at the top of the list of available link types and is used as the default.
