How to disable formatting changes in JIRA text

How do you get JIRA to stop converting two underscores to be italics start?  Directory names have __ in them, often multiple places, and JIRA converting this to a single _ and starting italics is not what I need, I need the correct text to stay in place.

preformatted piece of text
 so *no* further _formatting_ is done here
{noformat}

 It puts the unformatted text in a box with a dotted border, though, so it's still a bit awkwardly formatted.

 That is delivered functionality https://jira.atlassian.com/secure/WikiRendererHelpAction.jspa?section=all  I don't know of any way to turn off Text Formatting Notation.  You could submit a ticket to Atlassian and see if there is a config change to do this.
