IMAP wrongly deleting mail from Inbox

I have configured an IMAP inbound mail handler and expected it to leave the original e-mail in situ (as IMAP should do) but it is deleting the source e-mail once processed (i.e. downloading it like a POP session would do). How can I get it to leave the Inbox mail items intact on the server?
