Importing data from jira 7.8 to jira 7.9

Naveed Ashraf May 14, 2018

We are trying to import data from jira 7.8 to jira 7.9, but have hit the following error ....

An error occurred:

This data appears to be from an older version of JIRA. Please upgrade the data and try again. The current version of JIRA is at build number '79000', but the supplied backup file was for build number '78000'.

Is there no way to import between different version. Is ther no workaround?

Thank you all. We're going to stand up a 7.8 versioon, as it's automated so a simple change will create us a 7.8. Import and upgrade. Thanks all.

There is a KB and Atlassian Support team can help or you could simply install a JIRA 7.8 > restore the data > upgrade to JIRA 7.9

Take the exported file, import it into a temporary dev system on 7.8, upgrade that to the same version as the target system, then export again.

Once imported into the temp dev on 7.8, how does the upgrade work?

See https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver/upgrading-jira-applications-938846936.html

But, the short summary for these versions is "download the new version, run the installer and point it at the old version's installation".  If you have customisations in the installation or Apps, you may need to think a bit more, but if it's just for the export/import thing, you probably don't need to worry too much.
