Issue level permissions in JIRA

Kalindi Pathare August 6, 2019

We are into consumer devices. My group is evaluating JIRA for managing consumer device product programs.

The group works with vendors globally. Is the following possible in JIRA:

  • Give read only permissions to select issues to select users?
  • Give read-write permissions to select issues to select users?
  • Can you restrict this to certain fields of an issue?

Use cases: Multiple vendors need to update HW test results for example for the test cases they are responsible for, or we need to share product requirements with multiple vendors for reference purposes while working on a product.

We are not sure what version of JIRA we will use - so if there is any version that these scenarios will not be supported I would appreciate that information also.

Thanks much all!!

  • Yes, you can use "issue level security" to set a "level" on an issue that says "only people matching a rule can see this issue"
  • Yes, you do that with the permission scheme
  • No, Jira does not have field security, but you can move fields into the workflow and control their editing that way (only allow people matching a rule to use a transition that has the field editable in the transition)

All versions of Jira work this way (at least 3.0+ and Cloud, I can't remember if 1 or 2 gave us the permission and security schemes)

Thanks so much Nic for the answers - super valuable as we are evaluating JIRA.
