Jira Server - Move external user to another directory

Matthew Patton April 14, 2022

I have a user with the same user ID in 2 differnt external directories.  The user was made inactive on DIR1 (due to relocation). Jira still shows the user inactive but still in DIR1.

Anyway I can move this account to DIR2?  I don't want to rename the ID in DIR2 since this is a global ID and active account.

I had to switch the orders of the Directories so Dir2 had priority on user/groups. Then have the username renamed in Directory 1 so that if the order changed again, Dir1 won't overwrite same user in Dir2.

Jira considers users from different directories to be separate users, even when the identifiers are the same.

When it looks for users, and you have a duplicate ID, it reads through the directory list top to bottom and stops when it finds the first, so it's finding the user in DIR1 and working from that.  You've inactivated them there, so Jira sees an inactive user.

"moving" the account depends on your user directories.  Can you move the user between them?  (This bit has nothing to do with Jira, it's about your directories).  If you can not, then the next thing to look at is deleting the entry from DIR1 completely.  If you do that, Jira will start finding the (now) first entry for the user, the one in DIR2
