Notification Schemes that fire after JQL events?

I'd like to set up notification schemes so that certain groups of people get an update based on a custom field that contains a group name. 

So the use case would be: 

Notifications are sent based on that customField value. So IssueUpdated should send an email, but first it should check the CustomField: Groupname and send an update based on that. 

Has anyone done that? Or can guess how I'd do it? :)

I am not sure waht you mean by JQL events.

You can create a group picker or a user picker and in the project notificaiton scheme you can provide this field for the Issue Updated event. In this case all users in the group picker or user picker will get notifications.
