On Prem to SaaS migration

Jonathan Vaughan May 23, 2019 edited

I'm interested in looking into migrating our on-prem Confluence / JIRA and Bitbucket to the SaaS service. But I have a few initial queries.

1.) Can I migrate multiple on-prem instances (used by different teams) to a single SaaS service?

2.) Our teams are scattered all over the world, what can we do / how does the Saas Service deal with teams in different locations and latency? Something like a CDN?

3.) What are the disadvantages of SaaS over On-Prem? I see that not all of our plugins are available, But there must be other known disadvantages?

4.)  Are there limitations, such as the number of users or amount of data stored or total data transfer rates per month etc?

5.) I see pricing per product, are there any prices and associated discounts for buying multiple products? such as jira and confluence?

6.) If we find the SaaS offering isn't for us, how easy is it to go from SaaS back ton on-prem?

Thanks!

  1. Yes, but you will find it a lot easier to merge on Server than going to Cloud first
  2. No, your service will be run from the data centre nearest to the place you first sign up.
  3. Cloud does not scale above 5,000 users yet, you can't customise it as much as Server, and many of the apps are nowhere near as flexible as the Server versions (if they exist at all).  Some of us do not like the UI on Cloud as well, but you'll need to judge that for yourself.
  4. 5,000 users, going to 10,000 soon, and since recently, no limits on data stored.  There's never been a transfer limit.
  5. No
  6. In theory, it's an export and import.  In reality, we usually find it needs more than that, usually when apps have their own data that needs transferring as well.  But, it's a lot easier going from Cloud to Server than the other way!
