One sprint with multiple projects

Hello, the question is similar here. We are needing one sprint to cover projects, and I am also viewing all projects in one dashboard now. When I click on one of the projects, I just see the local sprints board.

I finally understood that the "board settings" refer to the project board not the dashboard.  So i will have a unified sprint dashboard showing active and backlog issues across the projects?

Hi @Christoph Neumann,

One board can have multiple projects as well - this is controlled by the board filter. Sprints can be used in multiple projects as well.

I hope that answers your question.

Thanks,
Moga

Hello @mogavenasan thanks for investigating.

I understood how to include several projects in a dashboard, using the gadget. But this just shows me the projects.

On the other hand, my sprint seems to be clearly confined to a specific project. When I open active sprints in a project, the sprint is Project name > Board > Sprints. I dont see an option how to add sprints from other projects, or how to create sprints across projects . Could you point me to how to combine sprints?

Thanks

Christoph

Hi @Christoph Neumann,

You cannot combine sprints, you can only move issues from Sprint A to Sprint B if you want to combine them.

If your board filter contains multiple projects, then you can create the Sprint in the board and add issues from multiple projects into it.

Sprints span to multiple boards, if the board filter contains an issue from Sprint A, then Sprint A will be shown on the board.

hello @mogavenasan

I now confirmed that I have full administrative rights. I can create a classical project that allows me to do parallel sprints.

But I am still clueless how to create one dashboard that gives a combined overview of the issues in several projects, as a list. I have seen this in the past, in previous companies, so I know it exists, and probably this is also what you are referring to, but I am unfortunately still not there.

so I create the dashboard, I add all projects into the gadget, then I see the names of all projects but when I click on the filter of one project and chose some type of issues, the screen switches to a view of that project only.

Instead, I want to see the issues of several projects listed one by one in one backlog view, and I want to be able to create one sprint of it. I dont know whether this is called dashboard or filter, but it would help if you could lead me 1 by 1 how to get there.

Thank you

hello @mogavenasan  I now noticed that there is a differrence between 'Dashboards' and 'Boards'. This is obviously confusing, but I found out that what I want is a joint board showing the issues of several sprints.

This is done by creating a new board (in any project), NOT by clicking on Dashboard, but by clicking on the board on the left side, opening the pull down menu and chosing create board. The create scrumboard, then create board from existing project. THEN, in the next pane, in the Project field (why is this in singular - should be Project{s)) you can type or select from pull down , all the projects that you want to see in this board.

If you have - like me - created a lot of useless boards before by trying and erroring, in order to delete them, you need to go back to the board pull down on the left, select view all, and then select delete from the board settings.

Heya @Christoph Neumann,

Yeap, Dashboard, and Boards are two different things in Jira. Sprints exist in Boards (or at least best used in Boards).

Glad to know that I can help. :)

Cheers.

Hi all!

I have a free jira account, I don't know if I can have one sprint with items from different projects. Maybe I need some screenshots to understand how can I do it.

I've tried to do it this way:

1. I have a sprint number 20 (not started) with items from one project A

2. I've created a new project B

3. I create new items in this new project B

4. I add one of these items in the existing Sprint 20 (from project A)

Result:

I see this sprint in both projects, but I don't find the way to see this sprint with all items from all different projects.

To see the sprint I need to select first one of the projects, so every time I only see the items of that project in that sprint.

Thanks!!

Is there a JIA recommended solution for having a SPRINT with issues from multi-projects?  I've tried various options above but with little success. Feels overly complicated

A couple of  important points:

  • Changing the project filter to include multiple projects effects other features.  An example is the Roadmap feature, which has a nice view for Epic Timelines for Executive eyes, would not be available.
  • But not changing the filter doesn't allow sprints to include other project items.

Simplest solution I came up with:

  • Create a project to solely do Dashboards and Sprints.  Include all projects in that filter.

Hi @Tom Thompson

Thank you for your comment, I'm interested in the approach you implemented, can you please provide more details on what you did? In that new project, are you able to use sprints with issues from other projects?

Thank you
