Best way to upgrade 6.2.7 to 7.1.9?

We have a JIRA 6.2.7 instance with an Oracle 10g database and we want to upgrade it to JIRA 7.1.9. We installed in one machine the new version and now we need to migrate the data; for which we made a backup in the 6.2.7 instance and we tried to import it into 7.1.9. Nevertheless, we had incompatibility issues. Which is the best mode to perform the migration of the data, importing the backup (in which we have the compatibility issues) or with a database dump?

You have two options

1) In-place upgrade. You can upgrade you production JIRA 6.2.7 instance. I would recommend upgrading it to 6.4 first and then upgrade to 7.1.9. This requires downtime (possibly a few hours) and you should ensure you have backups of the database and file system. If something goes wrong you will have to recover the system which could also take some time. So I prefer the next option as the recovery time is quicker.

2) Upgrade a standby instance. Install a new instance of JIRA 6.2.7 including add-ons on a separate server. Install a new blank database also. Export all the data from production and import into the new instance. Take production offline so that there are no updates to the data. Verify that the new instance is working and then perform an in-place upgrade to JIRA 7.1.9. Verify that 7.1.9 is working. Then this new instance becomes your new production instance. If something goes wrong just reenable your old production instance.
