CSV Import Field Mapping List Seems Incomplete

Mark Morris March 9, 2021

I am trying to do 2 things with import ... create epics and create issues linked to those epics.

---------------------- IMPORTING ISSUES ---------------------------------------

I am trying to import a CSV file of issues into JIRA.  The field destination dropdown list seems incomplete.  I don't see some of the fields I need to import.  Here is what I would like to import.  Screen prints of what I see when using " Issues / Import Issues from CSV" are below

  • Status
  • Epic Link
  • Comments

--------------------- IMPORTING EPCIS --------------------------------------------

In addition, I do not see a way to import / create Epics.  If this is possible, I need to import the following fields.

  • Summary
  • Epic Name

I do see "Epic Name" in the screen print below but it is part of the Issues menu and imports that data into the Issue ... does not create an epic and does not link the issue to an existing epic.

Hi @Mark Morris

As far that I know, these field are only available in External System Import. This option is available only to JIRA Admin, see below how to access it.

  1. Log in to Jira as a user with the Jira Administrators
  2. Select Administration - System - Import & Export - External System Import.
  3. Select CSV to open the CSV File import page.

https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver/importing-data-from-csv-938847533.html#:~:text=Log%20in%20to%20Jira%20as,select%20your%20CSV%20Source%20File.

I recommend you to first test with a small sample in a DEV/Staging environment and once you validate the import, you can schedule this in your production environment.

Good luck!

Thanks!

I am having trouble finding the path you suggested.  I am setup with administrator authority on the JIRA Board.  When I get into the "JIRA Administration" dropdown, I only see "projects".  I don't see any other path to get into administration tasks.

@Mark Morris

You can create a CSV in the following format:

Issue Type,Epic Name,Summary ,Epic Link
Epic , my-epic,Build a project,
Story , ,Add issues , my-epic
Story , ,Add more issues, my-epic

Then when you do the import you will see epic link in the drop down list.

Thanks for the response.  I just tried it with your example file but still don't see the "Epic Link" in the dropdown.  NOTE:  I saved your example as a *.txt file and then uploaded that.  In my prior examples, I was uploading an EXCEL *.csv file.

Below are the screens I am using and what I see ...

Thanks for the additional screenshots.  You will need to go to Administration > System > External System Import.  Then select CSV.  This import has more features then importing at the issue level.

You are setup as a Jira project administrator, you will need to have your Jira administrator run the import for you.  You should reach out to the individual that manages they application.

Thanks for the help.

So, someone with admin authority for the JIRA tool needs to do the import .... not just someone with project admin authority?
