Federating JIRA

Hi

Are anyone using or have experience of JIRA federation?

We have users requesting federating JIRA among all JIRA instances (all data centre) of our organization.  The info on Atlassian web site is very limited.  I can find https://confluence.atlassian.com/enterprise/federating-jira-managing-multiple-instances-461504624.html only.

Can you share your experience or point me to more detailed guides on this please?

Atlassian recommends using the Data Center version of their products for scaling. You can loosely federate Jira instances but there's no standard way to search across multiple instances.

Hi Matt

Thanks to your response.  We have been using Data Centre version of JIRA.  There are several such instances within our organization and unlikely will merge them in the foreseeable future, so we look at federation.

Do you mind elaborate a bit more to "there's no standard way to search across multiple instances"?  Because issue linkage across instances is a primary use case to our customers.

It's as he says.  If you want to search several Jira systems for something, you have to log in and search each one of them separately.  There is no way to "search across multiple instances"

You can link across them, but the search in Jira A is not going to find anything in Jira B, even if it is linked.

Hi Michael,

what is it that your users are really requesting? "Federating Jira" seems on a very high level. Some questions to get you thinking:

• Do users want to access issues from other instances? Across all projects? Only of specific projects?
• Do they want to link to issues of other projects? (Yes, according to your answer on Matt's thread.)
• Do these users need only read access to the issues? Or also write access?
• Do you use the same user base for all Jira instances? Or is this different per instance?

If you provide some more context, some other users might be able to jump in and provide some answers as well.
