Getting xml.etree.ElementTree.ParseError: not well-formed (invalid token) when running fix_entity_ids.py

This question is in reference to Atlassian Documentation: Project Import fails due to too many errors

My XML file contains too many characters that break Python's XML parser. Removing all of them is not feasible. Is there a workaround?
