Has anyone ran into concerns with the clearing of Manual Test Steps when changing the Test Type?

In XRAY, when changing the Test Type field from Manual to Automated[Generic] is there a way to keep the manual steps from being cleared?  What were the reasons for this approach?  Wouldn't you always want to keep the manual steps although the test was automated.
