I can figure out how to get article Categories showing in the KB home page.
I can't figure out how to showcase individual articles here instead.

Articles need to be assigned a category in order for them to display in the portal. This is done in the Jira project that corresponds with your portal knowledge base. You can feature articles which means they will show at the top of the list for that category. Check out these articles:
