Installation Jira on server with existing Tomcat

Michael Demey October 31, 2011

Hi,

I installed Jira before using the standalone version on Windows. But now I have to install it on a server that already has a Tomcat running and I have a question;

Will installing Jira Standalone (not the war) on the server mess up/conflict with the configuration of the running Tomcat?

Thanks in advance,
Michaël.

Depends on the configuration of the existing Tomcat. If there's a clash, then part or all of Standalone will clash with it and refuse to start.

I'm guessing that you actually want to run Jira inside the existing Tomcat though? If that's the case, then you probably want to work with the WAR version of Jira, as that is much easier to deploy to existing application-servers than trying to pull out the bits of standalone you need and move them across.

Thanks for the answer. It would indeed be better to run it in the existing Tomcat. Would I need a new instance to deploy the war? I also need to install Confluence afterwards (which also needs another instance, correct?).

No, a WAR file is designed to be run inside a container. You can run other things in that container too, and Jira doesn't have any need to be the only thing running in it, or even the first thing running. Although Atlassian do say it's a bad idea to put Jira and Confluence in the same one (and I agree. A lot)

Thanks. I followed the installation instructions for the war and I get a 404 when I navigate to the jira url. Is there any troubleshooting page?

Apologies for the late acceptance of the answer. Many thanks for your help.

There might be a clash with the ports. Please check if the existing Tomcat uses the same ports (8080) by

telnet localhost 8080

If 8080 is used, the Windows Setup of JIRA let's you choose another port.
