Is this automation possible?

J S S S Bharath June 5, 2023 edited

Hello,

For some of JIRA-Enhancements or JIRA-Bug. I want to create a "Story with some subtasks". With the below details

  1. The "Story" should "block" the JIRA-Bug or JIRA-Enhancement.
  2. The "Story" should have specific L1, L2, L3, L4 categories
  3. The "Story" should be an "issue in a EPIC".
  4. The "Story" should have N (3-10) subtasks, with specific contents
  5. The "Story" and "sub-tasks" needs to assigned to a specific individual.

As this needs to be done for multiple JIRA's, manually creating them is becoming time-consuming. Can you please answer the below questions?

  1. Is it possible to create an automation to achieve the above?
  2. If so, can you please help me create it?
  3. If #1 is possible, how to use the automation in the JIRA?
    • Is it like a custom automation, which I can see on the drop-downs in my JIRA home page?
    • Or, is it like a script that I need to invoke.

Creating 3 sub-task when "Story" issue is created should be fine and assigning these issues to same user could be done through automation rule.

Have few question.

1. Story should have an Epic link or Story should be in Epic level ?

2. You want to create the Story through automation or user's will create story, later sub-task and issue block should happen ?

Hi @Mohanraj Thangamuthu ,

Thank you very much for the response, please find the answers to your questions.

  1. Q: Story should have an Epic link or Story should be in Epic level ?

    • A: The story should have an EPIC Link, as in; it should be visible in the "Issues in EPIC" section of the JIRA EPIC

  2. Q: You want to create the Story through automation or user's will create story, later sub-task and issue block should happen ?

    • The story, sub-tasks, Issue-block and assignment to be created through automation.
    • Something, like the input to the Automation are
      • JIRA-EPIC
      • JIRA-Bug / Enhancement
      • Assignee Name
    • (PS: The EPIC and the JIRA-Bug / Enhancement is created by user)

Warm Regards

Thanks for the info. So a user will create an Epic. Once Epic is created you want story to be created automatically ?. I am trying to understand the trigger point on when the automation should create a story.

Hello @Mohanraj Thangamuthu ,

The trigger for the automation should be "manual", I want to decide if for a JIRA-Bug / Enhancement, the story or sub-tasks are required. And by that time I decide to execute the automation the EPIC would have been created.

To explain you little more:

  1. Team_1 creates a JIRA-Bug / Enhancement  and assign that to me.
  2. I will review the JIRA and decide whether the story-sub-tasks are required, if I my decision is Yes, I want to execute the automation.
  3. When I decide to execute the automation, the JIRA-EPIC to which the story needs to be linked would have been created / existing. And we already have the JIRA-Bug / Enhancement

Warm Regards

HI,

It is possible achieve such use cases using Automation rules in Jira.

If you are using Jira cloud, then you can refer this article to learn more on how to use automation rule in Jira: https://support.atlassian.com/cloud-automation/docs/create-and-edit-jira-automation-rules/

Here you can find library of example cases using Automation rules. Automation Library
