Issue Description Auto Template

Melissa Chenok May 7, 2019

Is there a way for me as the Jira owner to create a template for what we want format for issues to be and have that automatically be in every new issue that is created (vs having to "load" the template with every story created)?

If so, is there a way to change this for different issue types (epic, story, bug)?

Hi,

This has now been delivered for Next-gen projects, but not yet for Classic.

Regards,

Nate

Is this scheduled for release (for Classic Projects)? The use of "yet" as well as the comment from May 2019 about it being in active development suggest that it may be on the horizon. Thank you.

Hello Melissa,

Currently it is not possible to pre populate text into system fields which the Description field falls into, However check status update on the following Feature request for this functionality, as its currently being developed and should be coming to Jira cloud really soon:

As noted by the project manager in the update:

I have been eagerly watching this ticket for sometime, waiting for the opportunity to work on this feature. I wanted to update everyone to say that my team is actively starting work on bringing default system values to next-gen projects. This will be delivered in two parts:

1. Default values for custom fields and for the following system fields: Labels and Priority.
2. Default values for the Description system field.

Make sure to add your self as a watcher on the request to get updates on the status of the request when the feature is released.

Regards,
Earl

Do you have an update on actual timeline for this as I am looking into Jira vs other tools over the next week to bring to my new team and need this functionality?

Additionally are there plugins that will allow us to do this if not actually through Jira?

Hi Melissa,

We do not have a definitive timeline on the features release, just a confirmation that it is in active development at this time.  You're more than welcome to reach out to the project manager via the e-mail provided on the feature request, but do note that his answer will more than likely mirror mine in regards to the time table, and the best option is to add yourself as a watcher on the request to get updates as they are announced.

There are several add-ons that can do this in Jira Server, but unfortunatly nothing that I am aware of for the cloud platform.  Server side the workarounds and add-ons rely on scrip injection methods to apply this, but ultimately Jira cloud block's the options that could be used as a workaround for security concerns, because it requires launching scripting from the server into the fields, but these approaches can be used maliciously in the cloud when the instance is accessible to the internet rather than secured behind a firewall as is done with the self hosted server platform.

An alternative approach you can take is rather than having a description with a pre populated template, is to add in required custom fields for each point you would have initially had in your template with a description on each field noting the information the template would have requested to get a similar effect with the current functionality, making the whole create issue screen your template instead of a single field with the template.

Regards,
Earl
