Jira 6.1 Export Workflow as Image

In the new Jira 6.1 workflow editor, how can I export an image of the layout? This is for documentation purposes. In the classic editor there is an option for that (screenshot).

Hi Adolfo,

JIRA's new workflow designer doesn't provide screenshot functionality. I've raised JRA-35882 to track this feature suggestion, please comment/vote on the issue if you'd like to see it implemented.

As Erik suggested, you can take a screenshot of your workflow by following the steps here. Depending on the size of your workflow, you may need to enter full screen mode and zoom out to fit it on the screen.

Another approach would be to open your workflow in the old workflow designer and use its screenshot functionality. You can do this by clicking the "enter classic mode" link.

Fairly easy work-around for this:  

1. Right-click the workflow diagram in Chrome and click "Inspect Element"
2. The <svg> tag should be highlighted. Right click the element and choose "Copy as HTML"
3. Paste into a brand new file (see note below)
4. Open the file in Chrome
5. Right-click and choose "Print"
6. You've got yourself a PDF

If I get a chance I'll create a plugin that will render a workflow in the browser, so you can skip steps 1-4. 

(Note: if it complains about an encoding error, convert your file to UTF-8 using Notepad++ or the text editor of your choice.  I'm not sure if this was just something to do with my settings, but I figured I'd mention it just in case)

It worked perfectly for me. My diagram was huge, so print to PDF was not good and it left a lot of blank space. Instead I used a scroll window capture software, then cropped it.

Brilliant hack, Mr. Lynem. Still works for JIRA 7.11 with Service Desk. One additional error/needed-tweak that I found. For some reason the root svg element had two xml namspace (xmlns) properties, and that caused Chrome and some other tools to choke on exported SVG. Just edit the text and remove the second instance of the property, and the file works and looks great. I even was able to edit in Inkscape SVG editor.

The other answers describe how to save to a raster format, but if you want to maintain the fidelity offered by vector graphics, here's another option.

Because the new workflow designer is built on Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), a simple work around is to use a browser extension to download the SVG directly. (e.g. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/save-canvas-and-svg/mohncbcgngjkgmeapopaiibjpmgopgna/related?hl=en allows you to right-click→download on an SVG image)

Unfortunately SVG doesn't have great compatibility outside browsers, but I found that opening it in Chrome and saving to PDF using the File→Print→PDF menu worked well. You can then crop the PDF to an appropriate size using normal PDF editing tools (e.g. Preview.app on Mac OSX)

Here is the response regarding the renaming of screenshots...bummer, we lost that. And why does this JIRA board only allow 3 posts in a 24 hr period? That's one of the dumbest things I've seen

Thank you for the update, and I have been looking into this a bit more, and agree with you here. While I am very excite about being able to add the screenshot to issues via hotkey only without the need to navigate through a menu, I think the renaming aspect may have been overlooked here.

So I have created a new bug in conjunction with updating the documentation to reflect this new feature, noting the loss in functionality for renaming the file when attaching. I also detailed a workaround for renaming the files which requires a few additional steps but can be accomplished.

Please make sure to add your vote to help increase the priority, and add any comments to the new Bug that are related to your uses case so we can get an idea of the impact.

I made a feature request at https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRA-35882 which solved this problem and even enables more advanced usages, like including screenshots of the workflows in a wiki page, Don't forget to vote and comment on it if you want it solved.

I was struggling with this for ages, for virtually the same reason. I wanted to put a picture in to a how-to onboarding training guide.

The only way I was finally able to do this was to zoom in to my workflow, take a snapshot of it in sections (for example top, middle & bottom depending on how big your workflow is), paste each screenshot in to powerpoint, line up the images and then group them.

It sounds convoluted, and it was, but it was the only way I was able to get a snapshot of my full workflow that wasn't blurry!

How can something so simple be so hard to do. When I started looking at this, I seriously thought I must be overlooking a 'print' or 'export to' option, but I quickly realised it's not there.

That definitely works, but I would recommend Jared Lynem's technique to extract SVG. Much more flexible and you can always rasterize later in a graphics tool.

Also the new version of the workflow editor looks bigger, you can probally use Snippet (Windows) or Command+Shift+4 (Mac) to take a snapshot of the workflow.

I just checked my version of JIRA and it looks like they have a "Enter Classic Mode" feature that takes you to the original workflow editor to take a snapshot. I think you have to first edit the workflow before the Classic Mode and snapshot feature to display.
