No top menu and limited functionality

The menu on the top has never shown on my Jira. From all the screenshots I can see everyone has the menu with Dashboards - Projects- Issues etc. 

My Menu is on the side and it just seems to be missing so many functionality. 

for example I also dont have the "filter" options on the "Board settings"

With the menu on the left, it tells us you are on Atlassian's Cloud Jira, not server, where the layout is very different (and poor, in my opinion)

When you're looking at the Atlassian docs, make sure you refer to the "Cloud" versions of them, where you'll get more appropriate explanation of the layouts and options.

thanks - wasn't aware of the UI differences from cloud and server.
this UI seems to be lacking and hiding some important features.

Atlassian introduced a completely new design for their products somewhere last year.

The screenshots you are referring too, might be from before this new design or made from a server environment where the new design isn't available.
