Cannot add a story under a Epic in a structure

Manish

I have created a structure, added Epics under it. If I create stories from the same page where the structure lives then i am able to create stories and link it to the Epic.

Then problem:

I have few boards where alot of stories exists. Even if I change the Epic link to the one in the structure but still I cannot see those in the EPICS.

Image1: HKEY-458 shows one story under it. This story is created using the Issue button on the top.

Image2: Under the same Epic there are three stories and two of them are not showing up in the main screen. They only show up when I click the structure.

My goal is to have all the stories under one structure visible on the same page.

Hi Manish,

Thanks for posting.

Can you confirm that you can access these missing Stories directly from Jira without problems?

Also, in the first screenshot, I'm not sure if the Automation Editing Mode is simply disabled or if you're not using that feature at all. Since the Automation button is not highlighted, can you clarify whether you are using Generators to build this structure or if you're doing it manually?

I look forward to assisting you. If it's easier, you can also email us at support@almworks.com.

Best Regards,

Vlad

@Vlad[ALM Works] Thanks for the message. Yes i can access other stories from the other boards successfully. The problem happens when i link it to the Epic (belonging to the structure) and it is not showing up in the drop down menu of the Epic. But when i go inside the Epic i can see all stories. This is the problem i have and hence the above screen shots. Regarding your other questions, no i am not using Generators or Automation. When i click automation here is the screen shot. I don't know what to do with it.

Hi Manish,

Thanks for clarifying.

Since you've already manually added your Epics, you can bring in the Linked Stories with Automation. The general idea is that you would use an Extender Generator for such a case.

To do so, please follow the steps below:

1. Enable  the Automation Editing Mode button by clicking on the 'Automation' button (will be highlighted in dark gray or black, depending on your version of Structure)
2. Make sure you're focusing on the top level of your structure (the row with your structure's name will be highlighted in blue)
3. Click on the "+" sign next to the Automation button
4. From the drop-down menu, select 'Extend'
5. Choose ‘Stories under Epics
6. Limit to 'Current level only' in this case (It is a good practice to do set levels to just what you need to optimize performance)
7. Click Apply

You could also build the whole structure dynamically by starting from scratch and then inserting all your issues. Example:

Automation>+>Insert>JQL Query: type = Epic

And then follow steps 1-7

I hope this helps.

Best Regards,

Vlad

@Manish I don't think that other stories shown on project board, should have any impact on stories showing in the Structure. If you are not using any filter and just creating a Manual Structure with Epics, I would suggest you to add some filter criteria (which may be existing by default in the options) to display stories and/or sub-tasks under these Epics. Please check Structure documentation on how to do this, if you are not aware of it.

Hope it helps !

@Manish This is exactly what I was pointing out in my answer from what I remember from my past experience with Structure, but @Vlad[ALM Works] provided you exact steps, being a Structure add-on expert.

@Manish Can you check if you have used some kind of filter criteria on the main screen of Structure, that might prevent displaying those 2 additional stories on the main screen?

@Taranjeet Singh Thanks for the reply. No I am not using any filter for the structure. I just created a brand new structure and just adding Epics under it. Not sure why other stories in the board not showing up. There is no filter in the structure, but I am not sure about the stories in the board. Will that affect them showing up here?

One more question apart from this, group of stories are put in a Epic. How can I group all the Epics? I my past experience with JIRA there is an issue type called Anchor or Portfolio but in the cloud version I do not see anything. Please recommend how to group Epics and put under one issue type.

Thanks,

Manish

Hi Manish,

I believe you might have been using the Jira Portfolio app to visualize levels above Epics. The good news is that it's a fairly simple task with Structure. You can create the desired Issue Type(s), link them to Epics in Jira and visualize them with the Linked Issues Extender in a structure.

For now, in Structure Cloud, you can only establish the appropriate Links in Jira and visualize in Structure Cloud but you won't be able to create the Links between an "Anchor" or "Portfolio" and an Epic by drag and drop(from your structure directly) just yet.

This will be addressed with the item "Update data in Jira by rearranging generated content" on our Roadmap. Unfortunately, we don't have any timeline to share about the release right now. In the meantime, I invite you to subscribe to Structure Cloud Updates to be notified of new features.

Best Regards,

Vlad

@Vlad[ALM Works] Thanks for the message. I like your answer in which we can group Epics in a structure for visualization purpose. But that will result in creating multiple structures. In my past job, we used to create multiple Portfolios under one Structure and each Portfolios used to have multiple Epics. But I cannot find Portfolios in JIRA cloud now.

Now, if you are suggesting to create structures as an issue type to group Epics, then a structure can represent a release also. Right? Like all the Epics under one structure can be part of a release. How do you keep track of releases? Versions?

Hi Manish,

I was suggesting that you create a new Issue Type named Portfolio, for example. and then having your Epics under them. Your "Portfolio" Issue Type can contain the information about Fix Versions/Releases. Or you could also manually create Folders that you would name by your different Versions or Releases and have your corresponding Epics under the Folders.

If I'm still missing what you're trying to do, perhaps you can provide a screenshot of your old setup with Structure for Jira and Portfolio for Jira. But Portfolio Links are not available for Structure Cloud and given that Atlassian might be taking a different direction with Portfolio Cloud, we're not sure if/when we will be able to make that feature available.

Best Regards,

Vlad
