Does Atlassian plan to make Jira faster?

Rich Kingsford August 28, 2018

I wish I could instantaneously make, edit, move, and reassign tickets in Jira.  As fast as I can type would be nice.

Some web apps that do this very well:

- Trello

- Google Drive products

- Flipgrid

Do you realize that there are shortcut keys in Jira?

They make frequent operations like creating, editing, assigning issues faster.

See: https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirasoftwarecloud/using-keyboard-shortcuts-764478271.html

Shortcut keys are helpful, but it's annoying waiting 4-5 seconds after I create a new ticket or save something before I can do something else.  When I create or edit many dozens of tickets every hour, these seconds matter.  (the delays disrupt my train of thought too :)

The work done after the creation of an issue highly depends on the Jira instance, the workflow (listeners), apps, integrations, etc. but I can confidently tell you that if it requires 4-5 seconds, then something is mis-configured in your system.

If I were you, I'd start looking for the root cause for the slow-down. It may be difficult to find, but will eventually save a bunch of time for you later.

I cannot speak for Atlassian, but Jira is a more heavyweight tool compared to Trello. There's a lot of work going on underneath when a user makes a simple change like a reassignment. So while I also wish some things worked faster in Jira, I can appreciate the tradeoff. I also know that performance and UI responsiveness are a priority for Atlassian (I know specific teams who treat it as such), so we can expect gradual improvements.

That said, there are apps that may provide a different UI experience for a Jira user and act as a buffer. Whether such experience is better for you only you can tell.

Also, one can consider actually using Trello if its UI instantaneousness is of higher priority than Jira's features :)

Kind regards,
Igor

Excellent point.  But don't heavyweight tools desire to be instantaneous?  In medium-to-large companies, transition costs are often prohibitive.

Could you please recommend one of those different UI experiences for Jira?

Rich, I agree – ideally, using Jira should be a breeze. I hope the UX team works on that. I'll be at Summit / Atlascamp next week with our team and I'll try to find people from the UX teams at Atlassian to ask them if they have some specific plans on this matter.

As for the tools, many Atlassian Marketplace apps for Jira provide their own "boards" / full-screen UI for specific tasks. For example, Tempo Timesheets would offer a timesheet view for quick data entry, Test Management would provide the same for tests, Insight would offer a UI for managing assets.

I work for ALM Works, also a vendor of Atlassian apps. So take the following with understanding that I'm biased :) Our app "Structure" provides an additional view, "Structure Board", which is a little like Excel inside Jira. Some operations -- like creating or editing issues inline, without the heavy dialogs -- are very fast, because of the way the front-end of the app is built: while the operation is being finished at the Jira side, you can continue working and do the next change. Structure is about managing issues and hierarchy but a lot of our customers prefer working with Jira from Structure Board for most of the tasks. (And we do have extensive keyboard shortcut support.)

But going back to the original question, Aron makes a good point too -- probably your Jira instance could be optimized. Waiting 4-5 seconds after creating an issue is not normal, I believe it should be less than a second. There are experts here in the community who could advise some typical steps to speed an instance up, or if you have the budget you can also hire an Atlassian Solution Partner to tune it up for you.
