I am unable to use wild card * in searches - it does not seem to work

Khalid Darwish January 6, 2021

When searching using Summary ~  the wild card does not seem to work.  For example:

Search for Summary ~ "us-2.prd.ss-backend.failed" produces results whereas

Search for Summary ~ "*ss-backend.failed" does not  nor

Summary ~ "us*ss-backend.failed"  or other placement of the *

Hi @Khalid Darwish,

I'm not sure if this is something expected (or by design) or a bug:

  • Summary ~ "us*.prd" - this one works.
  • Summary ~ "us*ss" - this one doesn't work.
  • Summary ~ "us*.prd.ss-backend.failed" - this one too doesn't work.

My hunch is this got to do something with the dots in the string. And just FYI, you can't place (*) at the start of the search string.

Thanks,
Moga

I also had the same hunch that dots may be an issue.  Thanks.

Like @mogavenasan  mentioned, Wild cards cannot be at the start. See documentation https://confluence.atlassian.com/jiracoreserver073/search-syntax-for-text-fields-861257223.html
