I know you can use the control chart to see the cycle and lead times as issues move through a status, but I didn't know if you could make a custom field that would look at the create date and resolved date to give a measurement of how long an issue was open without having to calculate it manually every time or use the control chart.

You can try third-party add-on - Time between Statuses. It generates a report about the execution time between statuses. Set start/pause/stop statuses to calculate both transition time between statuses and Cycle and Lead Time.
Also, you can configure Warning and Critical Time for overdue limits for each Status Group.
You can monitor automatically generated data at Issue View Panel.

Hi @Benjamin Dains for this you need to create a scripted field. Which calculate the time and fill value in field automatically when issue get resolved.
