it's a bit of work but you can have custom swimlanes based on your defined JQLs.
So you just produce a JQL that says assignee = whoever and issuetype != subtask (this is not the exact JQL, just my idea).
You'll have to do this for each user.

Yay. I'm glad it worked out.
My favourite thing about the swimlanes is that they won't show up unless there is an issue in them. So if I create a swimlane for high priority issues, it won't obstruct the view at the top unless there is a high priority issue that needs my attention.
Also an important thing to have in mind is that an issue can't be in 2 swimlanes. That means if one issue shows up in high priority but it's also assigned to Joe, it won't show up in Joe's swimlanes that's below the high priority swimlane.

I saw after that the Everything Else catches anything that does not go in your above filters. I have got it so I just have my stories in here and renamed the row as Stories.
