What does "Escalate issue" do?

I am not a native English Speaker and i cannot imagine the exact Translation of the word "escalate" in the context of an issue. If someone could explain it to me briefly, I would be very grateful.

Hi @rzh535,

in my opinion, escalation means in this case that, it will be escalated (assigend) to someone, who is probably higher in hierarchy or at least can make a decision or can make sure that there is some progress on the issue.

Can somebody describe, what exactly happens, when I click on "escalate"
