failed upgrade now unable to start JIRA, even after uninstall and re-install

Mico Reyes August 2, 2019

upgrade failed for jira core from 8.2 - 8.2.4 and it looks like installation directory is missing files. unable to reach webpage.

I've since tried to start fresh by uninstalling jira and re-installing but i still get the ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED error and it doesnt seem like the JIRA service is being installed either.

using windows server 2014

Hi @Mico Reyes ,

What is your rollback process. Did you also restore database as well? Also can you let us know the upgrade process and logs ? this might help to answer better

Thank you for the replies. The Jira installation is not in production use yet. I left it unattended while upgrading and it stalled somewhere around 60%. I tried to re-run the upgrade and it finished but I could not open the website. I restarted the server and tried to perform the upgrade again and it said it finished successfully but again could not open the website.

This is when I finally try to check the logs and realized that the most of the files and folders in the jira installation directory is missing.

I then uninstalled JIRA thinking that I will just start fresh. I renamed the atlassian directories as well to be sure. The install was successful but still unable to fire up the website.

This is when I went a little crazy. I looked at the logs there were errors with catalina i think. I tried looking for the jira service and was unable to find it. I ran start service and it gave me an error that java_home was not set. I restarted and re-installed jira core and java_home was still not set. I could not find ant jdk folders so I went ahead and installed it as well and set java_home manually. It did not help either.

I'll upload the logs in a bit.

Thanks for the help! I really want to just start fresh. I'm looking to see if we had a backup of the server I could roll back into.

Ok, Did you use manually upgraded or used installer?

Try to follow these steps then

  • Copy the data (jira installation, home directories) and data base into dev from production.
  • Before you start, make the necessary changes like  urls in server.xml file. Database details in db config file.
  • Start the application and check if the system is starting as expected. In that way you can guarantee the same steps of upgrade can be followed during the prod upgrade and there won't be any surprises
  • Now download the tar file of the version you are trying to upgrade
  • untag the file and make the changes to the files like setenv, server.xml as in KB https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver/upgrading-jira-server-manual-938846939.html
  • Now start the application and see if all good,
  • or do a foreground  start and see the errors while starting.

Hi,

I've found the issue at least for why my new fresh installation was still not working. I didn't start the service manually/install service. I used the installer and checked the box that said install as a service but it didnt do that. It is working now after starting the service manually.

Hi @Mico Reyes,

Please provide us more details about your procedure to upgrade Jira. What exactly happened to the problem when you completed the upgrade? Did you use Jira's installer or did everything by hand? Do you have any Jira log after unsuccessful upgrade?

Thanks

Pavel
